First: is it chlorine or chloramine?
Chlorine dissipates on its own and has the sharp pool smell most people recognize. Chloramine is chlorine combined with ammonia, used because it stays stable longer in distribution lines — and because it's stable, it does not off-gas and standard carbon struggles with it.
Your municipality's annual water quality report states which disinfectant it uses. You can also look up your ZIP code on the EWG Tap Water Database. Which one you have decides the media you need.
Method 1 — Whole-home carbon filtration
A backwashing carbon tank on the main line removes chlorine before it reaches any fixture. This is the option that fixes the shower smell, the laundry, and the taste in every faucet at once, and it's what we install most often on city water in Metro Detroit.

Method 2 — Reverse osmosis at the kitchen tap
RO systems run water through carbon pre-filters and a semi-permeable membrane, removing chlorine along with dissolved solids, lead and many other contaminants. It's the best drinking and cooking water you can get at home, but it treats one tap — pair it with whole-home carbon rather than using it as your only defense.
Method 3 — Shower and faucet filters
Point-of-use filters are cheap and easy, and a good shower filter noticeably cuts chlorine. The trade-offs are short cartridge life, reduced flow, and the fact that you need one on every fixture you care about.
Method 4 — Off-gassing, boiling and vitamin C
Leaving a pitcher uncovered overnight or boiling for 15–20 minutes drives off free chlorine. Ascorbic acid neutralizes both chlorine and chloramine and is what's used in bath dechlorinators. All of these are fine for a single glass or a bathtub; none are a plan for a household.
Which one should you pick?
If the smell bothers you in the shower or your skin feels dry, treat the whole house. If it's only about drinking water taste, start with reverse osmosis.
